A group of concerned teachers in Kumasi has joined the agitation for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) hierarchy to consider the choice of a female running mate to consolidate electoral fortunes in the December presidential election.
Mr. Kwadwo Fordjour, spokesperson for the group, while addressing a press conference at the Miklin Hotel in Kumasi, last Friday, called for the intervention of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II and other prominent personalities to advise Vice President Bawumia and the National Executive committee of the party to consider a woman as the running mate.
He further said it will make the work of various campaign teams easier to amass votes across the nation to help “break the 8”.
Defending their position for the clamour for a female running mate, particularly from the Ashanti region, Mr Fordjour explained that women’s participation in governance will not benefit women alone, but to the benefit of the general society as a whole.
According to Mr Fordjour, women are the backbone of the family unit and communities and play an important role of providing care, support and nurturing their families. They also mould society as they play significant role in community building.
The group leader said women are essential to the development of children, stressing that women’s participation in decision-making in general has been beneficial to society.
Mr Fordjour emphasised that it is time to encourage more women in decision making, as they prioritise policies in the area of quality education, health, housing and social justice to help improve lives for everyone.
The Spokesperson further pointed out that the under-representation of women at any level of governance and decision-making results in a democratic deficit, hence the need for NPP to engage diverse groups (women) to help make better decisions.
In a related development, the Kejetia NPP Identifiable Groups (comprising traders from Kejetia, Central market and the Bantama Race Course market) have also recommended a female running mate from the Ashanti Region to partner Dr. Bawumia for NPP’s presidential ticket in the 2024 elections.
They called on the National Executives of the NPP to grant their plea, saying women are more compassionate and can equally deliver in governance.
Addressing the media at a separate meeting on Friday, April 12, 2024 Elder Emmanuel Gyekye said Dr. Bawumia’s choice will make or unmake the NPP, for which reason NPP needs a strong pair for the presidential ticket.
Chairman Gyeke pleaded that the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, intervenes on their behalf for the leadership of the NPP to appoint a female of Asante descent for the running mate slot, to mobilise teeming women population in the stronghold to help the party to “break the 8.
