Chiefs in the Volta Region have lauded government’s decision to rotate the celebration of the Independence Day in the region.
According to them, the celebration, which they hosted this year offered the opportunity for their people to witness at first hand various cultural displays from other regions.
President of the Volta Regional House of Chiefs, Togbe Tepre Hodo made this known when he led a delegation from the region to Jubilee House yesterday to thank President Akufo-Addo for giving them the opportunity to also host the event.
“We are here to express our appreciation for granting us the hosting rights to the 66th anniversary of our independence. It was indeed a momentous occasion as it gave us the opportunity to see at first hand the parade of our security services,” the chief remarked.
He continued that “And indeed, in line with the theme for the celebration, which emphasised unity, it was a joy to see the various cultural displays from all other regions of Ghana. We are extremely grateful for the honour done to our region.”
INCLUSIVINESS
However, it was the hope of the region, as espoused by Togbe Tepre Hodo, who is the paramount chief of Anfoega Traditional Area, that the inclusiveness emphasised by the celebration would be carried further for the good of the country.
ROTATION
Until the inception of the Akufo-Addo government, independence anniversary had always been centered in the capital, Accra, with little or nothing heard about the celebration in other regions.
Determined to break that jinx, the government decided to allow every region to have a feel of the national celebration by hosting the parade.
FEEL GHANA
President Akufo-Addo in his response welcomed the words of commendation by the delegation from the Volta Region.
He was particularly encouraged that the chiefs identified inclusiveness as the key take away from the decision to rotate the independence celebration.
He said, “…I began this process of rotating the independence celebration specifically for that reason [inclusiveness] to be able to make it clear to our people that each part of the Ghanaian fabric is part of the nation Ghana.
“That all segments of the population should feel the presence of Ghana, especially on this critical day of our independence celebration. So, to hear the very distinguished President of the Volta Regional House of Chiefs identify that, as the main take away, is very refreshing and encouraging to me. It means that I am on the right path.”
According to the President, those who attended the celebration in the Volta Region and others who watched on television would attest to the beauty of the region.
He remarked that “Anfoega, your place is excellent. It was a great opportunity to showcase its beauty.”
