Over one hundred and twenty high school teachers nationwide are benefiting from a STEM workshop by the Ghana Science Association (GSA), Kumasi branch.

According to the president, Prof. Jacob Agbenorhevi, the workshop aims at building the capacity of teachers to effectively teach STEM subjects.

Effective teaching of STEM is essential for accelerated development.

Unfortunately, the lack of standards has hampered the effective delivery of these subjects.

The workshop is under the theme: Tailoring STEM education for national development.

The teachers were drawn from all STEM subject areas including ICT.

The workshop which was first held in 2020, will be facilitated by members of the Ghana Science Association.

There will be breakout parallel sessions on how to manage STEM classes with strategies for effective teaching and learning.

Prof. Agbenorhevi expects the participants to acquire new skills after the training.

“They’re expected to learn new things to advance their knowledge and skills and the basic skill in teaching these subjects in their various schools.

“So, when they go up the educational ladder, it’ll be impactful,” he stressed.

Evelyn Obeng, a biology teacher at Opoku Ware School was optimistic the workshop will equip her with the needed STEM teaching skills.

“As a science teacher, I am receiving more training so that I can better equip my students with the needed skills for the development of the nation,” she said.

The 3-day workshop is sponsored by the College of Science, KNUST. The Provost, Prof. Leonard Amekudzi hinted of a network involving the participants and facilitators to ensure continuous training.

“We’ll provide a network of them after this programme,” he said.
