For the past few days, many Ghanaians have had to sleep in darkness for days after failing to buy credits for their prepaid meters following a technical challenge in the Electricity Company of Ghana’s system.
Some consumers in the past days were seen queuing at some offices of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) in an attempt to remedy the situation in their homes.
In a press statement released on September 28, the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) has announced that vending challenges with the prepaid metering systems are being fixed.
However, the problem continues to persist with consumers in Volta, Takoradi, Tema, Cape Coast, Kasoa, Winneba, Swedru, Koforidua, Nkawkaw and Tafo affected.
Ghanaians are frustrated and are calling ECG on their coils media platforms following numerous attempts to get electricity.
See some reactions below:
Just left the ECG office. Prepaid can still not be bought so they’re taking phone numbers and addresses of customers so they can come to your house and turn the lights on for you. I don’t know how many people they have on the field to be able to execute this task but we’ll see.

Imagine business owners who will suffer cos u people can’t get your things right? Imagine the number of customers who have not slept well in days because they do not have electricity. Yeah, it stress from sitting down comfortably in a chair and writing names can’t be compared.

The ECG has resorted to going to customers homes and connecting them after making payment.
Somehow I see illegal connection. Cos my meter still reads zero.

My sister just returned from the ECG office and guess what she couldn’t buy the power. I heard they said someone hijacked their system. I know on Monday we will hear NDC person hacked into their system. In any serious country by now the energy minister will step down.

When this is over we must probe what really happened with the ECG payment system. 5 days of this “glitch”. The conspiracy theories are swirling and to be honest some of them are not too far fetched

People are cued in the rain at the afianya “The ECG” office waiting but we’ve been told that the new card on the new meters is not working. After 3 hours I’ve finally been served at the ECG regional office in Tema. Not by power, not by might but just because I was lucky enough to be an old meter user. People I went to meet who apparently had been there 4 hours prior to my auspicious arrival are still there https://t.co/3ipRfVmz6a

Notwithstanding
1. Why is there no Back Up Plan
2. Are the Hackers demanding a Ransom
3. The IT Department needs overhauling
4. Can the NCA, Cyber Security Bureau and National Security step in… This is now a Threat To The State.— Sir Roger Ziyech! Website Development Expert (@roger_dakey) October 1, 2022
Hi @NAkufoAddo, please who is the ECG boss and why is he still at post after such gross incompetent of job delivery? Do the needful by Monday. Thank you.

It’s quite chaotic at the ecg office at afianya. Prepaid customers are not able to enter to buy power. We’ve been informed that data on the new card has some problems. Why must we continue to sleep in darkness. “Sammy Gyamfi”

The ECG probably procured an off the shelf system with little or no protection from hacking. The system hasn’t been operating efficiently since March. https://t.co/04aMKzhzNa

I feel like, if Ghana doesn’t sit up and be serious about cyber security erhh.
We’ll wake up one day and the country is in the hands of a teenage/cyber group.
The #ecg issue is just the beginning.

One Solution to Ghana’s energy crisis is having multiple providers just like in foreign countries. the ecg bn the only electricity provider isn’t the best.
— NanaYaw (@chasernana1) September 30, 2022
The ECG challenge must be fixed. System down for days. Not encouraging for businesses or customers.
The queues at the various ECG service centres or vendors doesn’t show most of the customers understand what is happening. We need clarity not the queue! https://t.co/Cm7SHQ4iBQ
