Rich culture was on display at the Eastern Regional capita, Koforidua, when Ghana celebrated her 67th birthday on Wednesday.
Cultural troupes dressed in kente fabric from the various ethnic groups in the region, put up magnificent displays of their rich cultures.
The region’s first-ever National Independence Day celebration, which was under the theme: “Our Democracy Our Pride,” took place at the newly commissioned 5,000-seater Koforidua Youth Resource Center.
The event was attended by Ivorian President, Alassane Ouattara, President Akufo-Addo, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Bagbin and various diplomats.
Addressing the gathering, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo expressed grave concern over some parental irresponsibility, adding that many parents have relinquished entire Ghanaian values.
To him, parents should focus on the values that set us apart as Ghanaians and not only to music, dance, food, language and fashion that form the basis of our cultural identity.
‘‘I do not refer only to our music, dance, food, language and fashion that form the basis of our cultural identity; I refer to the values that set us apart as Ghanaians,’’ he affirmed.
On the theme, Nana Akufo-Addo explained that the theme chosen for this year’s Independence Day celebrations is “OUR DEMOCRACY, OUR PRIDE”, and I welcome you all to Koforidua, the capital of the Eastern Region, which is hosting the celebrations this year.
He continued that, the decision to rotate the national celebrations around the country, instead of staging them only in Accra, the national capital, has certainly turned out to be a welcome nation-building exercise, that helps to focus attention on a different region every year, and at the same time rallies the nation together.
The President argued that the Eastern Region was very much at the centre of the independence struggle of our country and home to three (3) members of the BIG SIX of the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC).
He acknowledged founders of our nation like Joseph Boakye Danquah, Edward Akufo-Addo and William Ofori-Atta and their love of politics which seem to have continued into succeeding generations, with the son of one of them being him (the current president of our country).
The president expressed his gratitude to the school children from across the country for their excellent march as well as the cultural troupes from across the country on their magnificent display, which showcased the best of Ghanaian culture.
He further thanked the officers, men and women of the Ghana Armed Forces, the Police Service and the other Security Services for their display of order, pomp and ceremony and their willingness to put their lives on the line to secure the safety of our nation, the peace of our society, and the sanctity of our property.
